Resilience Strategy Programmes
The Resilience Strategy is integrated by three complementary programmes designed to optimize the adoption of CSA among different target groups:
1. Emergency and Resilience Programme (ERP)
2. Climate Smart Agriculture for All (CSA4ALL)
3. Social Protection through Production and Nutrition (SPPN)
The combined implementation of these three programmes allows to adapt FAO support to the different stakeholders involved from the poorest of the poor (SPPN), subsistence farmers (ERP) to commercially oriented farmers, primary and secondary school students, teachers, extension staff, chiefs, local representatives and public in general (CSA4ALL).
A well-known African proverb says: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. We believe so. In complex contexts impact cannot be achieved in isolation. FAO Lesotho Resilience Strategy is inclusive, implemented jointly by FAO and the Government of Lesotho in coordination with state structures, UN Agencies, NGOs and socially-committed private sector.
1. Emergency and Resilience Programme (ERP)
Lesotho Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) visual training materials have been developed within the Emergency and Resilience Programme (ERP) and used in all three Resilience Programmes. ERP is implemented by FAO and the Government of Lesotho addressing the complex vulnerability that leads many Basotho into recurrent food security crisis.
ERP acknowledges the tension between the objectives of emergency support, which is reactive, and building resilience, which is proactive and forward-looking, moving beyond an emergency relief focus towards delivering long term benefits.
ERP sequences short term funding along a 3 year-cycle and 3 thematic pillars:
1. Sustainable production: promotion of sustainable and integrated agriculture practices - Conservation Agriculture (CA), Home Gardening (HG), Nutrition (N), Natural Resources Management (NRM)
2. Capacity development: up-scaling of sustainable practices nationally strengthening local structures and producing harmonized, visual and appealing training materials
3. Policy & analysis: M&E, coordination, advocacy and GIS
2. Climate Smart Agriculture for All (CSA4ALL)
Climate Smart Agriculture adoption requires wide awareness and support. CSA4ALL enlarges the scope of CSA promotion, reaching other productive groups, mainly mechanized farmers and commercially oriented producers, along with other key audiences such as chiefs and local leaders, primary and secondary school students, extension staff, teachers and the general public. Focus activities in CSA4ALL are mainly training, demonstrations and exchange visits.
This programme also supports the production of visual training material on Sustainable Land Management and the implementation of Lesotho Land Cover Change map.

3. Social Protection through Production and Nutrition (SPPN)
The poorest of the poor are often limited in their productive potential. It is essential to adapt any livelihood support to their specific limitations so that effective empowerment can take place.
Through SPPN, FAO Lesotho promotes concrete complementarities between agriculture and social protection. In partnership with UNICEF, NGOs and the Ministry of Social Development, different pilot activities have been implemented exploring model of collaboration.
These initiatives and the policy environment have been evaluated with technical support from FAO project “From Protection to Production (PtoP)”.
