Sustainable Land Management (SLM) can be defined as “the use of land resources, including soils, water, animals and plants, for the production of goods to meet changing human needs, while simultaneously ensuring the long-term productive potential of these resources and the maintenance of their environmental functions” (UN Earth Summit, 1992).
Sustainable Land Management (SLM) is crucial to minimizing land degradation, rehabilitating degraded areas and ensuring the optimal use of land resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
Improved technical capacities and awareness among communities are considered essential for effective protection of natural resources at local level. Besides timely and scientifically sound data are equally critical for informed decision making in the protection of Lesotho Natural Resources.
The SLM Working Group is currently developing visual training materials largely based on the Sustainable Land Management Toolkit (2014) produced by UNDP and the Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation of Lesotho with GEF financial support.
The design of visual posters and handouts on the following topics is currently being developed:
- Sustainable Land Management
- Range Management
- Soil & Water Conservation
- Forestry
Moreover, FAO and the Government of Lesotho (through CEDAMA, Committee on Environmental Data Management) are currently developing a Land Cover Change assessment for the entire country. This information will provide additional spatial information tools and products enabling informed decision in the preservation and sustainable management of natural resources.
As soon as the visual training materials and spatial information products are completed, they will be uploaded in this website.
